Green Star is the most comprehensive Green Building Sustainability Scheme currently in effect in Australia. It is a voluntarily comparative national environmental rating scheme for buildings and the Green Star tools which have been developed by the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) are being used to give a comparative rating to a building by measuring the building's environmental impact.

Green Star covers many classes of buildings and ongoing progress and research is practiced to update these tools and the Credits in each tool to make it a good indicator of a building's impact on the environment.

Currently the following Green Star tools are being developed and can be used to rate a building:

  • Office Design
  • Office As Built
  • Office Interiors
  • Multi Unit Residential
  • Retail Centre
  • Health Care
  • Education Design
  • Education As Built

There are more Green Star tools in the Pilot Stage that will join this list in near future. The following list shows these rating tools.

According to Green Building Council of Australia, more than 11 Percent of Office Space in Australian CBD areas are now certified. This shows the industry's interest in the scheme which will turn scheme into a very necessary practice in the future of Green Building industry.

Green Star is a point based rating tool which includes Green Building initiatives and technological advances for sustainability practice. Only 4,5 and 6 Star rated building qualify for formal certification by Green Building Council of Australia. to get a Green Star certificate the project team must have a good understanding of the scheme in general and certification process in the specific tool for the project in particular in order to be able to ascertain a successful rating for the building. Green Star certification is an ongoing process which is different from other sustainability schemes addressed in Eco Engineering services. Although a project can engage a Green Star Accredited Professional at any stage, the best outcomes and highest star rating will be achieved when a Green Star Accredited Professional is engaged from the earliest stages of the conceptual design of the project.
